Confusing Words-Words Creating Confusion #1

 Difference between ‘accept’ and ‘except’  expect-except; access, assess, excess

1.(a) Accept:  /əkˈsept/ अक्सेप्ट: to agree to someone’s offer, proposal, explanation, or to agree to have something, etc. स्वीकार करना

Examples:

1.  He accepted (agreed to) my request to accompany him to Shimla.

2.   I cannot accept your explanation about the situation.

3.  Have you accepted his job offer?

4.  They have not yet accepted him as the member of their group.

5.  He has silently accepted all the allegations levied against him.

 (b) Except: /ɪkˈsept/ इक्सेप्ट: Excluding/Not including, leaving, छोड़ते हुए, सिवाए, शामिल करते हुए

1. All except Mr. Khanna were present in the meeting.

2. I have visited all states except Tamil Nadu of my country.

3. You may visit my office on working days except Friday.

4. This scheme is applicable for all except the bank defaulters.

 

2.(a) Access: एक्सेस /ˈæk.ses/ पहुँच: approach, right to entry, a method of reaching to someone/something

1. Do you have any access to the railway minister?

2. Don’t you have any access to internet on your phone?

3. That place is surrounded by water. You have only the access by boat.

4. This is military area. People’s access to this place is severely prohibited.

 

2 (b) Excess:

(a) /ɪkˈses/ ( Used as a noun)

/ˈek.ses/ ऐक्सेस ( Used as an adjective): अधिकता: something that is more than required

1.   You can return the excess ऐक्सेस amount if you have any.

2.   Excess (/ɪkˈses/)  of everything is bad.

 

3.(a) Alter (/ˈɒl.tər/)ऑल्टर  : to cause some change in the properties/characteristics of something; to cause a change in the size/

structure of something बदलना, परिवर्तन करना

(i)               Please alter your plans.

(ii)            I’m not going to alter the size of this map.

3 (b). Altar:  /ˈɔːl.tər / ऑल्टर : A type of table-type platform of small size to perform religious ceremonies: वेदी, जिस स्थान पर हवन किया जाता है l

 Pandit ji prepared an altar to perform yajna.

 

4. Desert (as a Noun) – Desert (as a Verb)- Dessert

 

a. Desert (as a Noun):

 

Pronunciation: /ˈdez.ət/

 

Meaning: The area mostly covered with sand and there is a general shortage of rain here. So very less chances are there for crops grow to grow.

 

Example: Sahara desert, Kalahari desert

 

b. Desert (as a Verb):

 

Pronunciation:  /dɪˈzɜːt/

 

Meaning: to leave someone in difficulty

 

Examples: He deserted his wife when she needed him most.

 

Dessert (Noun)

Pronunciation: /dɪˈzɜːt/

Meaning: a kind of sweet dish

Example: I like dessert after eating dinner

 

4.Bath & Bathe

The pronunciation of Bath (Noun) is /bɑːθ/ and that of bathe (Verb) is /beɪð/

 

 (1) If we use bath (Noun), we need to use ‘take’ as a verb in front of it.

 

·       I take bath daily.

·       We should take bath daily

 

(2) If we use the verb of ‘bath’ i.e. ‘bathe’, we need not use ‘take’ as a verb.

·       I bathe daily.

·       We should bathe daily.

 

6.  Practice (Noun) & Practise (Verb)

(1)Practice (Noun):

 Pronunciation:  /ˈpræk.tɪs/

When this word is’Practice’, it’s a noun. Meaning: It means the act of doing something regularly as a habit, tradition or a custom

Example:

(a)It’s a common practice in India that some dowry items are given to the bride by her parents.

(b)Practice makes a man perfect.

(2) Practice (Adjective): /ˈpræk.tɪs/

 

(i)Do some Practice Exercises

 

(Exercises that involve sentences for practice)

 

(i)I have purchased some practice notes.

(The notes that are meant for doing practice)

 

(3) Practise (British Use), Practice (American Use)  when used as a Verb:

Pronunciation: /ˈpræk.tɪs/

Meaning: To do something regularly as a habit, tradition or a custom

Examples:

(i)                           I practise/practice some physical exercises daily.

(ii)                        My friend has been practising/practicing law for the last four years.
